SUMMARY:Waste Management in the Healthcare Setting
DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: \n \nKristin Eby\, MSES\, Senior Project Manager \nSpeaker Bio: \nKristin Eby has 28 years of environmental health and safety (EHS) experience across numerous industries including automotive foundries\, machining and extrusion facilities\, consumer and industrial chemical manufacturers\, and the aerospace industry. Ms. Eby has spent 12 of those 28 years as an EHS Compliance Consultant in assisting various companies and municipalities\, large and small\, in meeting and navigating the complex requirements of Federal\, State and local EHS regulations. Ms. Eby’s areas of expertise include environmental compliance audits to determine applicable regulations specific to the client & identify compliance gaps\, waste stream analysis and management\, DOT hazmat compliance\, and the implementation and management of environmental management systems. She has also led the development and implementation of a comprehensive sustainability initiative for a small chemical manufacturing company to meet the expectations and requirements of Walmart\, its largest customer. \nMs. Eby has served as President and Vice-President of Fort Wayne’s local American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP – Anthony Wayne Chapter) as well as the Treasurer of the Northeast Indiana Sustainable Business Council (NISBC). \nPRESENTATION: \nWaste Management in the Healthcare Setting \nSynopsis: \nAs a result of numerous historical environmental tragedies that resulted from the improper disposal of hazardous waste\, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed comprehensive and often confusing regulations for the proper handling and management of waste. Healthcare establishments are not exempt and must know and understand the waste it generates\, and ensure proper disposal. \nThis event will help SMSHE members achieve the following: \n\nLearn how to characterize waste generated by your facilities\, especially your hazardous waste. Hazardous waste from healthcare facilities could include spent concentrated cleaning chemicals\, radioactive waste\, spent flammable hand sanitizers\, etc.\nIdentify your hazardous waste generator status and understand the requirements for each. This includes waste container labeling\, storage area inspections\, development of contingency plans\, training\, and hazmat shipping regulations.\nUnderstand how to manage other types of waste\, including fluorescent bulbs\, spent batteries\, biohazardous waste\, and non-hazardous waste.\nReview common hazardous waste violations to ensure you address these at your facilities before you receive a visit from a regulator.\n\nLunch / Meeting sponsored by SES Environmental \n
